Just when you think certain celebrities couldn’t get any more obnoxious, we are treated to an interview with last night’s Golden Globe winner, James “I’m the King of the World” Cameron in Entertainment Weekly. On page 35 of the latest edition of the print version, Cameron responds to the following criticism of his latest film “Avatar”:
EW: “Avatar” is the perfect eco-terrorism recruiting tool.”
JC: Good, good. I like that one. I consider that a positive review. I believe in ecoterrorism.”
Apparently, he said this in all seriousness.
For those of you who do not know what eco terrorism is, meet the people of ELF. No, not the blue creatures in “Avatar,” but the people of the Earth Liberation Front. According to Wikipedia, ELF is the collective name for anonymous, autonomous individuals who use “economic sabotage and guerrilla warfare to stop the exploitation and destruction of the environment.” In other words, they burn down buildings and engage in other destructive activities under the cover of darkness because they believe we should all still be living in caves and subsisting on roots and berries.
HotAir has an interesting "Green" update that has to do with the Enviro-Fascists up north and back east. They are the LED street lights that apparently do not get warm enough to melt the snow on the street lights, thus, causing accidents -- one death resulting so far. I hope the family sues:
The effort to change the bulbs traffic lights from high-energy incandescents to low-power LEDs does make sense — in those areas of the country where snow is not a factor. Unfortunately, just as with the decision of Seattle to stop using salt for clearing roads of snow, the decision to go green has created fatal traffic conditions for no good reason whatsoever. At least one person has died from the use of LED traffic lights in snowstorms, as the LEDs are not hot enough to melt the snow when it covers them (via Instapundit):
Cities around the country that have installed energy-efficient traffic lights are discovering a hazardous downside: The bulbs don’t burn hot enough to melt snow and can become crusted over in a storm — a problem blamed for dozens of accidents and at least one death.
“I’ve never had to put up with this in the past,” said Duane Kassens, a driver from West Bend who got into a fender-bender recently because he couldn’t see the lights. “The police officer told me the new lights weren’t melting the snow. How is that safe?”
Many communities have switched to LED bulbs in their traffic lights because they use 90 percent less energy than the old incandescent variety, last far longer and save money. Their great advantage is also their drawback: They do not waste energy by producing heat. …
Illinois authorities said that during a storm in April, 34-year-old Lisa Richter could see she had a green light and began making a left turn. A driver coming from the opposite direction did not realize the stoplight was obscured by snow and plowed into Richter’s vehicle, killing her.
“Would the accident have occurred if the lights had been clear? I would be willing to bet not,” Oswego police Detective Rob Sherwood said.
The picture on the front page shows the traffic light in Oswego that caused the death of Lisa Richter earlier this year. The snow made the traffic light useless. No driver could possibly have spotted a red light, and even the green would have been difficult to discern at speed, especially during the daytime. Oswego may just have well turned off its traffic lights and set up four-way stops at every intersection for all the good these systems do in snowstorms — when traffic lights are more necessary than ever.
... Warming alarmists have often bemoaned air travel saying it increases the threat of global warming, but this time they’re blaming the phenomenon for the tragedy surrounding Air France Flight 447. That flight is believed to have crashed in the Atlantic Ocean and have claimed up to 228 lives.
Alexei Kokorin, a climatologist for the left-wing World Wildlife Fund’s Russia Climate Program, blamed global warming for the crash. He told Russia Today (RT) on June 4 global warming is to blame for making the weather conditions some think is to blame for the crash more severe....
Of course this is just like the Left... blaming corporations and capitalism for plane accidents when there may be an easier explanation:

ANGRY residents last night accused local authorities of contributing to the bushfire toll by failing to let residents chop down trees and clear up bushland that posed a fire risk.
During question time at a packed community meeting in Arthurs Creek on Melbourne's northern fringe, Warwick Spooner — whose mother Marilyn and brother Damien perished along with their home in the Strathewen blaze — criticised the Nillumbik council for the limitations it placed on residents wanting the council's help or permission to clean up around their properties in preparation for the bushfire season. "We've lost two people in my family because you dickheads won't cut trees down," he said.
"We wanted trees cut down on the side of the road … and you can't even cut the grass for God's sake."
Later, the meeting was cut short when Mr Spooner's father, Dennis, collapsed in his chair and an ambulance had to be called. Despite losing his wife and son and everything he owned, a friend later said he had not stopped or slept since the weekend.
Another resident said she had asked the council four times to tend to out-of-control growth on public land near her home, but her pleas had been ignored.
There was widespread applause when Nillumbik Mayor Bo Bendtsen said changes were likely to be made about the council's policy surrounding native vegetation.
But his response was not good enough for Mr Spooner: "It's too late now mate. We've lost families, we've lost people."...
....Maloney, whose firm specializes in aviation issues, said city and Port Authority officials want to clear the area surrounding LaGuardia Airport of birds, but environmentalists don't want the birds, mostly seagulls and Canada geese, disturbed from their nesting grounds....

Virginity Pledgers Have Lower STD Rates & Engage in Fewer Sexual Behaviors (6/05)
New Study Re-Examines Virginity Pledge: “Junk science” exposed at HHS conference. The US House of Reps officially approved a $10.82 million increase for abstinence education 24June [Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill].

A new study, by Rector & Johnson, reexamining data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health [Add Health] [database funded by the US gov’t], found Virginity Pledges to be helpful tools in deterring sexual activity.
This Heritage Fdn study pointed out serious and consequential flaws in an analysis of virginity pledges released in 4/05 by Peter Bearman [Columbia Univ] & Hannah Bruckner [Yale] [4/05, Journal of Adolescent Health] who publicly defamed abstinence education.
Kristi Hayes [Dir, Government Affairs, Abstinence Clearinghouse]: “Abstinence education continues to be proven effective. Is anyone really surprised? Abstinence education is common sense. Kids want relationships and security. They want meaning and purpose in their lives. Abstinence education teaches kids how they can have a healthy, happy future. That’s why it works.”
For more than a decade, abstinence educators have encouraged young people to abstain from sexual activity & to take a verbal or written pledge to abstain from sex until marriage.
Although abstinence programs have received recent negative coverage, the new report released at the Welfare Research & Evaluation Conference hosted by the US Dept of Health & Human Services (HHS) seeks to clarify previous findings.
The new research validates what abstinence educators have known all along -- abstinence pledges work. The new research was conducted by Robert Rector and Dr. Kirk Johnson of Heritage Foundation: "Adolescents who take virginity pledges are less likely to have STDs as young adults when compared to non-pledgers from similar backgrounds. Adolescents who take virginity pledges are also less likely to engage in risky sex behaviors than were non-pledgers. The more risky the behavior the less likely pledgers are to do it."
Taking a virginity pledge is "strongly associated" with lower rates of STDs -- teen pledgers are 25 percent less likely to have STDs as young adults than non-pledging peers, Heritage Fdn researchers Rector and Johnson said in their reports.
In addition, when pledgers and non-pledgers are compared on oral and anal sexual activity, data show that the pledgers are significantly less likely to engage in such practices, the Heritage researchers said. This remains true even when sexually active pledgers are compared with sexually active non-pledgers.
Rector & Johnson found that Bearman & Bruckner ignored 4 statistically significant measures of STD, all of which showed that pledgers were far less likely to have an STD than non-pledgers. The researchers instead chose to report a fifth measure, which showed the same result, but was not significant.
The Bearman study, based on just one STD measure, said the pledgers' STD rate "does not differ" from that of non-pledgers. However, the Heritage researchers said, when STD rates were analyzed in 5 ways, pledgers had significantly lower STD rates in 4 areas and had a rate that was almost significantly lower in the 5th area.
“Several discrepancies were immediately apparent,” stated Rector.
“For starters, the Add Health data clearly reveal Bearman and Bruckner inferred [that virginity pledgers are more likely to engage in alternative sexual practices (sex other than vaginal intercourse) when compared to non-pledgers,] by looking at a microscopic subset which included only 21 respondents out of a total sample of 14,116. Bearman and Bruckner used junk science to unfairly attack abstinence education.”
Rector & Johnson’s report found that although many years pass between the adolescence when a pledge is taken and marriage, taking a virginity pledge is associated with a broad array of positive outcomes.
When compared to similar non-pledgers, adolescent virginity pledgers have far fewer sex partners overall; pledgers are less likely to engage in sex while in high school and while not married as a young adult; less likely to experience teen pregnancy and out-of-wedlock birth; less likely to have children in their teen and young adult years; less likely to engage in alternate sexual activities and outercourse; and less likely to be infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD/STI).

5/05 -- NEW STUDIES PROVE ABSTINENCE EDUCATION WORKS - According to researchers from the Institute for Research and Evaluation (Salt Lake City, UT), the Robinson Institute (Charlotte, NC), and Baylor University (Waco, TX) abstinence education works.
The results of abstinence programs Choosing the Best, Teen STAR, Worth the Wait, the Choice Game Curriculum, and Peers Educating Peers about Positive Values were studied and found to be effective.
Teens participating in these programs were more likely to remain abstinent or to practice secondary virginity than their peers who did not receive abstinence education.
